Unconventional playthings in Unexpected Places

2190903226_1be8b3766b1What can happen when we're anchored for a while in the kitchen and the G!Kids are roaming the GrandHome to find amusement?

Recently I found out.  With a long day ahead of us, I was astonished recently when a threesome of my grandsons aged four, three, and 'nearly two' discovered something at the back of my closet that occupied them for a whole day, with no fighting and endless variations on the game.

I thought you'd want to know that they found...

Because after some thought about this, I decided that anything that provides hours of entertainment for the G!Kids (and no arguing) I should share with you, no matter how peculiar, right? Embarassed

rollers_003A basket of my long-forgotten hair rollers, tucked deep in the back of the closet, gave them a day of joy.

It started when I heard my Dear Little Robber Band howling with delight (always a red flag) so I quickly beelined to the source of the squeals.  I peeked my head in to see them huddled around this basket they had found tucked deeply in the back of my closet floor.

You would have thought that someone let them in by the back door to ToysRUs after closing.  They were passing out those crinkly little things to each other like a found treasure.

ist1_11098990-girl-hairdo-apple-curlersI quickly gave this mischief an instantaneous approval rating (I don’t need the rollers and replacement cost is less than $10 – so why not?), and went back to the kitchen to prepare their favorite lunch (from my Five Minute Recipes collection, which I hope to share with you soon).

Very quickly my little tribe figured out how to pull out the sponges  which broadened the game:  They stuck them on their fingers, and I enjoyed their continuous flow of imaginative play as those 'sponge fingers' were first waved around as monsters; then became currency as they created a store for exchanges of various colors and sizes.

They packed them up to be carted from room to room, threw them, chomped them, pulled them, traded them, and buried them for hide and seeks.  For hours.

So I said to myself, why hide this Unconventional Plaything from my Grandgifting comrades?  Maybe you too would like to try them out?

Assuming that you don't have such a basket already in your closet, I've gathered a nice colorful selection of hair rollers in our GrandGifting Amazon Shop for GrandGear for you.

And here are some suggestions for a curious Roller Basket implementation:

• Get a few different sizes and colors – this is easy as they come that way. 31EopIT0uZL._SL500_AA200_

31pffiGdqCL._SL500_AA200_Get ones with sponge inserts that come out and go back in easily, for little hands.

• Put them in a basket that’s 30% bigger to allow for expansion as they won’t be able to stack them so neatly on the way back in. (Sort of like baking cupcakes with batter in tins only 2/3 full)

• Bury them deep in a closet floor, where they can find them during sneaky forages :)

• Don’t tell all your friends about this – not sure this ‘toy’ will make it to Dr.Toy’s  picks or the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio , although I think I’ll tell my daughter-in-law who is a pediatric occupational therapist about it...

But please remember where you saw this first...

Because if ‘Granny’s Rollers’ appears one day as the new Fisher Price classic toy, we’ll know where it came from.

FisherPriceFarmIn the meantime, if your preference is for a true classic toy, here's a link to Browse & Buy a true classic, the Fisher Price Little People Play n'Go Farm celebrating it's 50th birthday!

headshotminicropEnjoy the sweet memories!

LOL - How fun! My senior mom has curlers without the foam and I remember those being one of her fun activities for grandparents and grandchildren as well. I'm out of luck, though, as I'm one of the members of the Baby Boomers Generation who gave up on curlers long ago. Ah well, there's always monster tag. :) :) :)

Great idea, Kaye - How about Monster Tag, wearing rollers? That would make for a true multigeneration al 'sandwich' activity!

My older brother always thought my sister and I looked quite like monsters in our rollers....

When my children were little, it was pots and pans that made them happy for hours which came with lots of noise! Hair rollers are much quieter and certainly more unique. I'm sure there are many things in the home which can provide amusement for small kids.

I think you're concept is great. I'll pass it on to many of my friends who have grandkids.

Thanks, Adriane! And love your reminder about the pots & pans sound effects

Perhaps we can call this 'noiseless home amusement' - Lettuce spinner is next on the list!!

Wonderful to meet you and have you along for this Grand Journey!

It's amazing how much fun kids can have with unexpected things. When I got a new fridge I saved the box because I knew my grandkids would be coming the next day. They never even got out any toys. They just played with the box for hours.
